Herbarium

An eco-friendly Houseki no Kuni charity fanzine with an encyclopaedic theme featuring the documentation of flora and floriography, communication through the arrangement of flowers. Featuring up to twenty-six flowers, this encyclopaedic zine is a reference to the first task Phosphophyllite was assigned but never started.

ABOUT

In addition to being an illustrative zine, HERBARIUM will not only be featuring the unique meanings of twenty-six flowers but also detailing the origins of these floral messages in both Hanakotoba and Floriography. We have meticulously prepared multiple documents of information just for this zine which will only be available to contributors as well as those who decide to purchase the zine.

Our project has officially ended! Thank you to all those who supported us and our endeavor to not only create a beautiful product but also our practices to help preserve our planet in any way we can.

FAQ

What is a zine?
Short for magazine, a zine is small self-published book. Fanzines in particular feature a collection of fan-made works such as art and written pieces.

Will there be a reprint?
Unfortunately, our team would not be able to handle another round of reprints.

How environmentally conscious is this project?
From 100% recycled paper stock to environmentally conscious packaging and delivery, we’re making sure we take all the necessary steps to make this project as eco-friendly as possible.

What charity will you be donating to?
As of March 2021, HERBARIUM donated $3,250 to FAME, the Foundation for Australia's Most Endangered Species.

What is floriography?
Floriography refers to the language of the flowers, a means of communication through the use or arrangement of flora. It is typically used as a means to send coded messages to others.

BIbLIOGRAPHY

While HERBARIUM is an encyclopaedic themed zine, please be noted that our mod team is not comprised of professional academics, and thus the quality of our research may not be to the highest standard. We have, however, done what we can to the best of our abilities.

Please refrain from using this selection of flowers in your own work or as a source of information. As we continually research and write for these flowers, this list may be edited to accurately reflect our findings and thus should not be used as a credible source. Additionally, a lot of work went into forming this list and we ask that you respect our efforts. We encourage you to do your own research if you decide to look into one of flowers listed.

Artists

HERBARIUM is comprised of twenty-six artists and who have each been assigned a flower to illustrate for. This pictorial list is out of date and we have since enlisted two pinch hitters to join us;
Sabimilia and Pecoralsa.

Moderators

HERBARIUM is run by a total of three people with the occasional help of a few others. Mods will also contributing to the project by creating floral illustrations which will be showcased on the informational pages alongside the artworks if the assigned artist does not.

Lianna
( @_ltreat )

HEAD MODERATOR / OVERSEER

Head honcho and local animation fanatic, Lia enjoys running and participating in various group projects in her spare time. While HERBARIUM is her first zine project, she has participated as either an artist, merch artist or both in several zines. She has also tabled at conventions, has experience in printing zines, running her own online store and organising large groups of people in various contexts.

Makip
( @_makip )

GRAPHIC DESIGNER / PRODUCTION

Studying visual communication and a trusted executive of the local university art society, Makip is HERBARIUM’s graphic designer. Extremely well versed in the world of printing and paper, he has had experience running, designing, formatting and printing the yearly art book this society produces. He also has a heavily trained eye for the technical, reflected in both his art and his design work.

Uzyo
( @uz_yo )

ASSISTANT / EDITOR

Uz is a fellow university art society executive alongside Makip and was in charge of handling various social events and projects. Well versed in writing, design and overly-pretentious film analysis, Uz has a hand in a multitude of creative projects such as typography, abstract art, fashion and photography. As a lover of the arts of all kinds, especially music, Uz is HERBARIUM's jack of all trades.

We also owe a lot to Meoq (@milkandsquid), our previous floriographer and researcher, as well as Cindy (@pigeoncindy_) who occasionally offers her assistance.
